Despite living in the most peaceful time in human history, the world has become less peaceful over the last seven years, according to the 2014 Global Peace Index.
Explore the data on the interactive Global Peace Index map

The Global Peace Index measures peace in 162 countries according to 22 indicators that gauge the absence of violence or the fear of violence. This is the 7th year the index has been produced. Results from the 2014 Global Peace Index show that:

Since 2008, 111 countries have deteriorated in levels of peace, while only 51 have increased.

Europe retains its position as the most peaceful region with 14 of the top 20 most peaceful countries.

The world has become less peaceful over the last year, mainly due to a rise in terrorist activity, the number of conflicts fought and the number of refugees and displaced people.

500 million people live in countries at risk of instability and conflict, 200 million of whom live below the poverty line.

The Global Economic Impact of violence reached US$9.8 trillion last year, which is equal to 2 times the total GDP of Africa

I love the idea of measuring peace. Has any one ever done that before GPI? I would like to know

thank you for such a well presented and informative piece. I only hope that those who make the big global decisions take it seriously.

It´s nice.... not only being on the list, but being on top of this list.  The most peaceful country in the world.  Iceland. The country that has a "birthday" today, 17. june.

We should aim for an equal distribution of resources. Sooner or later our most important resources will decline. And only the most powerful nations will be able to provide their people.
Also humans waste a lot of their resources. Buying new products while their old products could have been fixed. Throwing away the old one to buy a new one. And the manufacturer benefits from it. Often it is stimulated to make products with cheaper parts that break down easier. It is called planned obsolescence. Consumerism, planned obsolescence, fragile global economy. This problem is bigger than peace itself. It would be very difficult to fix this mess.
