"Job hopping" is uncomfortable for people who do not like change. But it is true. If all goes well I will retire in 2 years from where I have worked for 22 years. But my grown up children are making a lot more money than I make doing similar work. The one making the most money has changed jobs around every 2 years and has negotiated a raise or better benefits on every change. Times have changed. I told them I agree with what they are doing, a job is not a marriage.

I have been in toxic job cycle since I graduated college. I would go for the first job offered to me and not research the company. Everywhere from dealing with backstabbing and mean coworkers to the most horrific toxic manager. Looking back I think I was such a people pleaser and thought this was just part of it. I never stood up for myself. The worst was when I was at a large corporation for 8 years and never got a promotion because “I was so good at what I did”. I was in a dead end position and had applied numerous times for other departments. I heard the same line “we need you where we have you”. I also heard the “you should be thankful for having a job” line countless times so I just put up with the toxicity for far too long.

While there is value in staying a at a single job (like knowing the company infrastructure and coworkers), I've found the most growth personally (both in experience and financially) by switching jobs frequently.

“Job Hopping” is a great way to get away from a shitty, abusive boss!

“Pay your dues” was one of the biggest BS moments I had at one of the biggest IT companies in the world. I was 21 and I think there was an element of ageism where they gave me all the rubbish work whilst all the veterans got the fun work. Went on for 2 years and I left

Good job missy. I’m in a “career” networking group and the facilitators are grossly out of date; not to mention “retirement” age. I quit the group b/c their advice & workshops are antiquated and they are clueless when it comes to REALITY of how abusive the job search process

Hi Jennifer 👋 - Thanks for the advice that is relevant in 2022, not 1992. Have a Great Day 😃 !

Back in the day, there was a social contract between employer and employee. Corps blew that up and now employees must take care of themselves. Jump as you see fit. Paying dues is also idiotic. If they treat you like crap, get yourself out as soon as feasible.

I loved the last job I held. Time flew by because I was always productive and the pay was great. However, the atmosphere was so toxic that turnover was constant.

Really bad career advice I got was to be overly professional.
As counterintuitive as that sounds, I started getting calls back when I was actually MYSELF!!

If you're a jokster, JOKE! If you have OCD, go ahead and straighten that picture and make a joke out of it. Cuz people wanna know what they are walking into.

I think another one worth mentioning is that whole being pushy/meet them at the door thing.

There was a time when that would portray that you REALLY want to work there. Now it is just creepy and will have security called on you.

Even in my career (teaching) the average lifespan of a job is certainly getting shorter. When I started I worked with people who had taught in the same school for 40 years. That's very rare now. I lasted 12 years in my first job before I took a leap and moved for bigger better things, however, it did give me the unique privilege of being able to witness my class grow up from little kids when they arrived, into adults when they left us.

I was told beggars can’t be choosers. I think that affected me and I was always thankful to job. It just made me less confident to ask for anything including promotion.

I have never felt thankful for my previous job because they were so toxic. I didn't work hard there at all and I always thought of hopping into another job.

I’ve been job hopping since I was 15, there was always a good reason too. Needing experience, being payed for my time, getting a certificate, pay increase. And now I am looking at changing my entire career path from health care to automotive because I got a chance to.

Had a boss say, “You should be grateful.” (but I only made 20, 410 year in this century but it required a degree) and act surprised and sad when I left.

Job hopping works if your resume shows an increase in rank/pay as you hop.

As I hiring manager, if anything, I tend to be warry of someone who has been with their company for 7+ years. Those candidates tend not to have the creativity or drive that I need, and usually expect much more hands on managing (or even micromanaging) than I want to provide.

Your advice is generally very solid, and both candidates and employers would do well to listen to you.
