It's not rocket science, really. Aliens, T2, Titanic and Avatar put characters at the center of the story, and accompany it with action and spectacle that feel earned. The themes resonate with a wide audience because he understands genre. As Grace said, audiences will forgive a lot if you show them a good time overall.

As a diverse person (black man) I loved Top Guns way of representing. It mirrored real life just people trying to do their jobs well. This agenda push hurts movies cause most of us know It doesn’t matter just tell a good story. Grace your echo chamber let’s you believe us black folks want to be pandered to. We just want good stories devoid of social justice nonsense. Liked the break down but felt I needed to actually speak as one of those diverse people you love to talk about.

*After watching the first Avatar on Disney+ I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was, I had never watched it before so I was very open-minded, I'm watching Avatar 2 in 4DX in Chicago and I'm actually really excited to see how it turns out*

As far the representation goes (just to respond), I think this is a situation where we can’t have our cake and eat it too. We criticize Hollywood for having too much, poorly done representation (usually cause it’s just lip service [i.e. Strange World]) at one time, yet also criticize current movies for their lack of representation and demand that every new film figures out a way to include it. For newer films, having organic representation is much easier, but for movies that have been well established for 10+ years, it’s much harder to add something WITHOUT it seeming like lip-service. I think that if someone doesn’t go see this purely because of the skin color of the leads, I think they should pull themselves out of their own little Zeitgeist.

Cameron has actually done a lot of activism work for the U.N. Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues
It's an issue he genuinely care about - kind of the reason he made Avatar in the first place.

"Diversity" and "representation" seem to have degenerated to only mean physical appearance and sexuality, whereas one's philosophy and thoughts are expected to be less diverse than ever before.

I saw the first Avatar with no 3D first...& didn't liked it, it felt basic. But then I saw it in 3D...& i loved it.
So I understand that 3D really makes this franchise come alive, so I'll see Avatar 2 in 3D first.

I loved the first Avatar movie and I'm super excited to see this. But due to my disability I'll have to wait for both Disney+ and Blue Ray. Unfortunately I'm also 90% blind in one eye so trying to see it in 3D just isn't an option. Loved your video and can't wait for your official review!

In general. Just because a movie has a simple storyline doesn't mean it's bad. I loved the first movie. I also loved Top-Gun Maverick and that is one of the most simplest forms of sequels.

Never bet against James Cameron.
(at least for the projects he directs and writes/co-writes himself).
The man is a master of global box office magnetism.

His films carry enormous word of mouth propagation, too.
He gets even the non-film buffs intrigued, hooked, and spreading praise.

Yes, it's been a loooong gap since the original film's release.
But people remember.
The long wait might even add to the nostalgia's power, as audiences just remember basic feel good emotions like being wowed.
They want to feel that again.

Never clicked so fast on a video. I have followed you for so many years Grace and I think Avatar is the only movie you and I disagree on (which is fine ofcourse.) To hear these first thoughts is so amazing to hear. I have loved Avatar for such a long time and holds a special place in my heart for the message about indigenous cultures. My grandfather was Yankton Sioux (Dakota people) before moving to Belgium to build a better life for himself. Even though it is not specifically about Native Americans, I always felt a connection with Jake Sulley as I was trying to reconnect with that side of my own family, being an outsider and being displaced from that culture. But this video has made me even MORE excited. Leave it up to you to make a 18 video and not spoil a thing, greatly appreciated 🙏

Cant wait for this sequel. I think the first movie had its issues but I loved it overall. The creatures and world of Pandora is the biggest draw for me. The humans and science/business plot lines I don’t care for.
