A lot of people dont know this, but even though the government can not deport you if you have a pending asylum case, they can detain you until your case gets heard in court. With the massive backog of asylum cases, you would be detained for years. Therefore, almost everyone agrees to get deported rather than wait years in detention for their asylum case to be heard in court.
