Playing Old Games on the Steam Deck is Delightful

Sure, flashy new games are great but I have to say, playing old games on the Steam Deck is equally if not MORE enjoyable. That's thanks to a variety of factors that make the Steam Deck a great way to explore older (maybe not QUITE retro) titles. So, this video covers some of the reasons I think the Steam Deck is an ideal platform for aging titles along with a few of the older games I've been playing so far.

This is why the Deck is known as a backlog slayer!

Basically previous gen 'AAA' games will run best and greatest on the latest hardware because:
+ naturally were made with older targeted specs
+ optimised and patched over time
+ become cheaper, with 'goty' editions, bundles, bargain bins, pre-owned etc...

Most of my time with the deck has been spent replaying childhood classics and being amazed at how great they feel with the trackapds. So far i played Red Alert 2, The Sims 2 and 3, Half-Life 2, Call of Duty 1, 2, and 4, NFS Underground and Most Wanted, BioShock, and so many others... It's amazing.

Recently played Singularity at 60 FPS. The game is rated unknown, however fully functional on Steam Deck. I use the system mainly for games generation 2010-2015: Darksiders 1 & 2, Metro 2033 and Last Light. Dishonored, etc.

This is the exact same epiphany I had with my Steam Deck. I started playing The Darkness 2 and now I can’t wait to re-visit (or play for the first time) some great games from that generation!

Older games are my bread and butter, so I can definitely recommend one: Papo & Yo. It's a 3D third person puzzle platformer that takes about 4 hours to finish. It's about a rather serious topic, but dresses that topic up in a extremely playful and surrealistic style. Also, it runs great on Deck.

I’ve been playing fallout 3 for the last few days and man…That’s a game where you can run 60fps on ultra settings without draining the battery. So much fun going back to it. Because it runs so good I ended getting new Vegas and fallout 4. I’m sure you have these or at least one but if you don’t I highly recommend.

Thank you for featuring Jet Set Radio. Terrific game. Beaten it like 4 times already on a variety of systems.

I have found that most modern games can offer three hours of battery life as long as you force the TDP to 8W and lock the framerate to 30fps (and lower settings until it becomes stable). Games like Cyberpunk 2077, FFVII Remake, Witcher 3 offers three hours with optimized settings. But I agree the whole PS360-generation has tons of great games that hold up extremely well on a portable system. Especially since the Steam Deck is powerful enough to run them at 60fps with decent battery life. I'm thinking, Enslaved, Batman Arkham-series, Dishonored, Bioshock, Dead Space, Mass Effect, Street Fighter IV (instead of "V"), Dirt 3 etc. They also don't take up a lot of disk space. :)

100% agree. The games I've played most since I got my deck are Fallout New Vegas, Bioshock and the Quake remaster. It's definitely my new favorite way to play Fallout.

One of the main reasons I'm getting the Steam Deck is for the older games. For me this is a way to play my favorite childhood games in a portable console.

the old games thing is defiantly where I think I'll end up spending most of my time, seems like its going to be the perfect system to go through my steam library playing some classic jrpgs or old point and click adventure games sitting in a comfy chair. Definitely glad to hear that most folks are having good luck with older games

Been playing Arkham City and Bioshock lately. City gets you 4.5 hours battery at default settings 60 fps and Bioshock gets me over 5 hours battery at default 60. The 360 era really does seem to be a sweet spot and the games look and run better than they did on console at the time.

Also newer games like Little Nightmares 1 and 2 that I couldn’t get into on console work great for Steam Deck for the style of games they are. And Bully is definitely one I’ve also been playing. Never played it when it released and it’s old enough that it’s harder to get into on console, but on a handheld it’s great.

This is what I think I will be enjoying the most from the steam deck as well. This and the indie games that have the gameplay going for them as the main thing. Great with all these tips in this kind of videos, Im stacking up everything that looks interesting here on my wishlist for when my steam deck shows up. If only 25% of the games in my list stick with me I still got like hours upon hours of games to enjoy and wont need to spend a fortune on buying them either

This is one of the things I am most excited by too. I’ll emulate up to ps2 etc but then hope to find ps3 era games for cheap that run superbly. Hurry up Q3!
