debt isn’t always a bad thing.

Texas and California have huge economies, with a larger GDP than most countries. if they have $100B cash, any good wealth manager would tell them to put it in mutual funds/treasury bonds and use the profits to pay off the debt (depending on the interest on their debt, which for a state will be much lowe than for a citizen).

when we invest in companies, if they have 0 debt, that is an instantly disqualifying factor. nowadays, 0 debt means stunted growth. somewhere else someone has a similar business model, but they’re managing their cash flow and using debt to accumulate assets and build a customer base.

if there was really a problem, both California and Texas could liquidate assets and pay their debt off pretty quickly.
