Siblings Kody and Isabelle are shopping for their grandma's surprise birthday party at Yoke's Fresh Markets. While shopping they run into Tara, a cashier and learn how she scans every item using a barcode, then bags up all the items before collecting payment from customers.

[Tara] Hello! You guys find everything you needed today?

[Kody] Yes, we did. We're shopping for our grandma's birthday surprise party.

[Tara] Oh, well, it looks like you found everything she could possibly want. I hope she has a great birthday.

[Isabelle] I hope so, too. She's going to be so surprised.

[Kody] Plus, we've learned lots about the different jobs in the grocery store today. What does a cashier do?

[Tara] I'm so glad you asked. As a cashier, it's my job to ring up all your items. So you come up, I scan each item, I bag it all up, and then I collect payment from you.

[Isabelle] How do you know how much they need to pay?

[Tara] Good question. Actually, every item has a barcode on it. I scan the barcode, the computer adds it up, gives me a total.

[Kody] That's really cool. It must be nice that you don't have to keep track of it all in your head.

[Tara] For sure!

[Kody] My gift card should cover it.

[Tara] Perfect. Thanks. You kids have a good day.
