Putin says Russia is ready for Ukraine peace talks with Trump

Russian President Vladimir Putin said he would be willing to hold talks with Ukraine if Donald Trump proposed them.

Speaking at the beginning of his annual marathon press conference, Putin said that he had not spoken to Trump for four years but was willing to hold talks.

“I don’t know when I’m going to see him,” he said. “He isn’t saying anything about it. I haven’t talked to him in more than four years. I am ready for it, of course. Any time.”

Putin, who said Russian forces in Ukraine has taken control of 189 settlements so far this year, said Russia's nuclear weapons were there for deterrence.

Russia claims to have come to "protect" Russian-speaking Ukrainians, but I am a Russian-speaking Ukrainian who has never wanted to see Russian troops on our land. The "peace" that many people advocate for is not true peace; it is betrayal. Such a settlement would abandon hundreds of thousands of people to life under occupation and to the mercy of Russia's fascist regime.

Even this compromise would not stop the war because Russia will come again. Their imperial ambitions are not limited to Ukraine; appeasement will only embolden them to pursue further aggression. True peace requires the full liberation of Ukrainian territories and holding the aggressor accountable for its actions.

What kind of negotiations can be held with someone who has sacrificed hundreds of thousands of their own soldiers and taken the lives of countless Ukrainian civilians over a piece of land? This war was initiated by Putin with the sole aim of destroying Ukraine, and now he pretends to have intended negotiations or agreements.
