Hank - A couple thoughts ... Pete's w/Cummins KT450s & KT525s could be equipped with either 12V or 24V starting systems. If this is a 24V system, you'll may be able to identify it (if the truck is from the late '70s or so) by a Delco Alternator with two outputs (12V and 24V). The 12V output is near the rear of the alternator body and the 24V output is close by a little farther back on a transformer/rectifier box bolted to the back of the alternator body. Generally this configuration uses 4 batteries - two series connected batteries in parallel with another set of series batteries. These will usually have two battery cables connected to the back of the starter (these are the ground wires), two battery cables to the solenoid on the starter (from the two +24V outputs) which also connects to the 24V alternator wire, and two jumper cables which also connect to the 12V alternator output (and also provide12V power to the rest of the truck).

Depending on when the truck was built, there could be a 12V/24V series/parallel starting relay instead of the alternator described above (the relay connects batteries in series for starting and parallel for running/charging).

Since you system seems to be functional at 12V, you may just have a 12V system - if so the two wires at the back-bottom of the starter are ground cables and I think you should find two battery cables also attached to the solenoid which is near the front of the starter on top. You probably need to have a battery connected to each pair of battery cables (solenoid/ground on starter) because you need to have parallel cables to deliver enough current for the starter.

Hope you might find this useful. Sure do enjoy you channel!

I'm thankful these guys do what they do. I'm to broke to restore an old cabover and I want to so bad but at least with this channel we can get virtual tours and hear them fire up. I hope there's cabover in heaven. If I make it and I pray I do

I live in Germany and that as a common man. But if I were lucky enough to win the lottery, I would definitely fund the restoration of one or two of these great old trucks. So wish me luck, guys!

Hi Hank and Wiley. You have a 12/24 system. You need 24 volts to the starter and then 12 volts to the rest of the electrical system.

Hank, you need to put one of those farm Jack's, railroad jack in your truck. You can always use one to raise the cabs on those trucks.

That truck setup with the equipment, tool boxes and all is sweet 😍. I'd love to have one of those for myself. Good work guys, going to take me a couple of days to get through this length video, which I appreciate.

Uh, Hank, a doghouse is the engine cover between the seats, not the bunk. And that truck is a pre 1981, it has the round, better looking

Wiley that filter and pump next to fuel tank is the primer for the fuel and the lever on the front that hank moved is usually a selector for either tank to prime from one tank or the other.

Why do people abandon these trucks dont take much to keep them running and in decent shape. All that money just rotten away in fields blows my mind

I drove a 69 cabover Pete just like that one, only difference was mine had a 318 Detroit with a 4+4 transmission back in the late 70s, Enjoy y’alls videos from central Florida. If you look in the sleeper you’ll see the air intake tube
