Supreme Court Questions Timing Of FIR, Slams West Bengal Govt Over 'Horrific' RG Kar Rape, Murder

A three-judge bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud expressed grave concern over the "horrific" rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Supreme Court questioned the delay in filing the FIR and criticized the West Bengal government and police for their handling of the case, including attempts to initially pass off the crime as a suicide. The bench condemned the state for allowing vandalism at the crime scene and stressed the importance of protecting protestors, including doctors and students. The Court ordered the creation of a 9-member task force to develop safety measures for doctors and directed the West Bengal government to submit a status report by August 22, 2024.

We have to go back to the history and amend certain laws. Many without FIR are in jail, counting the bars. All the existing laws has to be studied and laws has to be amended. Court has to take strict action against these erring officers. Thanks 👍

During the hearing of the suo motu case related to the August 9 incident, in which, a 31-year-old junior doctor was brutally raped and murdered at the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, the Supreme Court today (August 20, 2024) has constituted a 9-member National Task Force (NTF) to look into the safety of medical practitioners at workplace. The apex court has also ordered the CBI and WB government to submit a status report by 22nd August. Further, the task force will provide an interim report within 3 weeks and a detailed report within 2 months.

Earlier, post-mortem report of the trainee doctor found 16 external and 9 internal injury marks, and ‘death due to manual strangulation and smothering’. This horrific incident sparked nation-wide protests by doctors, demanding justice for the victim and severe and exemplary punishment for the culprit(s).

In the last few days, people from all walks of life took to the streets to protest against the barbaric act. Spontaneous and continuous protests are being witnessed across the state of West Bengal, especially in the streets of Kolkata against this heinous crime.
