Man, I'm working on an episode right now which covers Dolby Vision and HDR on iPhone 12. I'm glad I saw this when I did because it helped out with some parts. Thank you. : )

I’ve seen a lot of flickering issues with Dolby Vision on the new 12 lineup and only a few people are addressing it. Surprising how many people either don’t notice or don’t want to offend Apple fans.

What is the track you used for this video? I’m diggin it

Filmic Pro recently released an update that lets you shoot in 10 bit SDR. Only problem is that you can only shoot up to 30p. I’m hoping they’ll be a 60p option soon.

the reason the flickering is happening is because apple has it to where the exposure is locked to the subject the camera is autofocusing on. but he does make a great point. the flickering makes it look like the iso is adjusting

Good points. I like the hdr features, amazing a phone can even do it real time. One huge issue that Apple needs to fix with the 12 pro / max is the frame dropping when shooting in hdr. Stuttering video is a ‘pro’ killer, and one of the main reasons I went from Android to iPhone in the first place. Really hope that is fixed in a software update in the near future!

Refreshing to hear someone putting things in context and dismissing the 'highlander-ism' that goes on with everyone saying <my gadget> is best. Great work!

Great insight, not heard anyone talk about this

I’m having the same problems with my iPhone 12 pro Max thanks for demonstrating this for the masses.

Also when recording gravel or other small detailed things in the background it glitches a lot and looks very bad. I forget the term for that

100% correct on with the flickering video issue on HDR. Videos are unusable with the flickering, and I can't find anyone else who narrowed down on this issue.

Curious question. I’m not a creator or photographer but I know a little bit. With the iPhone 12 pro max I’m getting a lot of light glare/ghosting in my videos in situations like filming my Christmas tree. Is this normal ? They said that it’s just because Im expecting to much just to point and shoot and not having those glares. I would need to move a little bit then shoot the video, I feel like I never had to do this before on any phone and seems like a defect ? Do you know anything about this or can you tell me if that’s normal and I am expecting to much ?

HDR photos are amazing, can’t say the same with HDR video.

Great info! Does loading the HDR footage into iMovie and then exporting to SDR retain the 10 bit encoding, and fix the background flicker? How is working with the lens flares and ghosting?
