How to Plant Bare Root Strawberries

In my opinion planting strawberries using bare root starts is the best way to go. Bare root Strawberry plants are inexpensive and if planted at the correct time they are a great way to establish a large strawberry patch.

In this week's video I take you through the process of planting bare root strawberries in your backyard garden.

Remember that when you plant June Bearing strawberries you should remove all of the blossoms for the first year to allow the plants to focus on growing strong plants.

If you are planting everbearing strawberries you should remove all of the blossoms until mid summer. You can let newly planted everbearing strawberries produce a late summer/fall crop of berries.

Soak your bare root strawberries in a bucket of water for a couple of hours before planting.
The most important part of planting bare root strawberries is getting the correct planting depth. Be sure to watch the video so you can see what that correct depth is.
Fan out the roots and plant the bare root strawberries in a nice sized hole with the bottom of the crown right at soil level.
Once you have planted your bare root strawberries be sure to water them well and feel free to use a liquid fertilizer like fish emulsion once or twice a month.

Thank you for the part on the crown. That too freaked me out as far as how much to bury.

Thank you I got bare root strawberries and I was puzzled as to how to plant them. I did just as you had stated without knowing ahead of time if I was doing it correctly. Hopefully most of them will survive. Thanks for the information and stay safe in these troublesome times😁🌻❤️

I keep failing with the Ozark Beauty. This time I will keep the crown super high. I guess I've been burying them too deep. Thank You

Hi and thanks for this video! I bought Hirt's Evie Everbearing. I cannot figure out if they are 'June bearing'... it only says "spring, summer, fall". Do the same guidelines apply with regard to the blossoms?

A year ago I bought a bare root strawberry 10 pack from home depot and none of them survived. They didn't have nearly the roots these in the video has. I think the only way the big box store ones will live is if you buy them the moment they hit the shelf because they probably started waking up in the store, in the box and died.

Thank you for the detailed video. Can you tell me the spacing. 4x6 bed is a 24 sq ft bed. Divided by 25 plants would be just shy of 1ft radios per plant. Is that correct? Can I plant closer together? I have some ozark strawberries. Thank you so much for your time and I look forward to your reply.

Love the videos, just subscribed! I've known about the crown rot for many years and have had little success planting bare root myself. I grow Quinault exclusively for the enormous never ending harvest. My plan this season is to expand the plot and would like to try bare root again. Currently we are in a freak warm spell in Michigan in late March. My research tells me to plant them in early April for my zone. The ground is thawed and workable now, if I put them out at this time (March 21) and it we get the seasonal frost/freeze/snow/ice, will they perish or will their growth already be so slow it won't affect them? I can do a light mulch to protect them as well if necessary. This is going to be a fantastic year, I can feel it!
