I liked that the dub had it that yugi was scared of Atem going overboard, as it really harkened back to the penalty games atem would push on anyone who lost to him.

The reason she surrendered is due to the fact that she had nothing to get over bls attack points. She was also highly intimidated by bls, due to the fact in the non ritual version of black luster soldier, it mentions that it is the card that rivals blue eyes, she hadnt been faced with a card that intimidating at all.

So here's where the JP dub and the Eng dub detract, BUT the English dub manages to turn this moment into a sort of catch up moment with the character development for Yugi and Atem relationship that wasn't adapted due to it being from the chapters S0 adapted.

In the JP dub this duel had Yugi so angry at Pegasus for what he did to Kaiba that Yugi forgot about the promise he made with Mai to duel honorably and throught the duel Yugi trying to play high ATK monsters was portrayed differently in each dub.

JP: Yugi wanted to beat Mai fast so he could get to Pegasus quicker, in the process he was showing very little respect for Mai as an opponent and this beatdown strategy wasn't going to work on her with what she set up.
ENG dub: this further developed Yugi and Atem's fractued alliance because Yugi still had not gotten over that the spirit in the puzzle was willing to go so far to beat Kaiba if it meant killing him. in the JP dub yugi sort of gets over this afterwards but here it's a sticking point where Yugi and Atem are struggling to work together because Yugi fears Atem and the trust they had is broken, which gets a massive payoff in their duel with Pegasus because now that Yugi trusts Atem it allows them to play off the mind shuffle trick and it helps fuel Atem with the motivation he needs to beat Pegasus. This dilemma Yugi and Atem had though was already worked out in the manga starting with the Death T tournament and the final story arc of S0, the Monster World Arc, all of which brought the development we saw Yugi and Atem go through in the anime up to speed.

and this was the english dub mind you, it's an extraordinary feat for the dub.
