The Skene family is one of the most respected and renowned clans in Scotland, with a rich history that spans centuries. This clan, which is also known as the Clann Donnachaidh (Robertsons) of Mar, has a proud heritage that is celebrated and remembered to this day. One of the most significant traditions of the Skene clan is the story of the wolf and the dirk, which tells of the bravery and cunning of the progenitor of the Skene family.

The story of the wolf and the dirk begins with King Malcolm Canmore, King of Scotland, who was out hunting in the forest of Stocket in Aberdeenshire. During the hunt, the king was suddenly attacked by a large wolf, putting his life in great peril. It was then that a young Highlander named Robertson stepped in to save the king. Robertson, who would later become the progenitor of the Skene family, wrapped his plaid around his left arm and thrust it into the wolf’s mouth. With his dirk or sgian in hand, Robertson then stabs the beast to the heart, saving the king’s life.

King Malcolm was so impressed by Robertson’s bravery that he offered him a choice of two rewards: as much land as was covered by a hound’s chase, or what would be covered by a hawk’s flight. Robertson chose the latter, which formed the ancient barony of Skene in Aberdeenshire. This barony would become the ancestral home of the Skene family, and it would be remembered as the birthplace of their proud heritage.

The story of the wolf and the dirk is an important part of the Skene family’s heritage, and it is reflected in their armorial bearings. The Skene family’s shield is emblazoned with three wolves’ heads impaled on dirks or sgians, while one of the supporters of the shield is a Highlander who holds a drawn dirk in his right hand. This image is a symbol of the bravery and cunning of the Skene family, and it has become an enduring part of their identity as a clan.

The Skene clan has a long and rich history that is steeped in tradition and pride. From their bravery in the face of danger to their cunning and resourcefulness, the Skene family has always been a symbol of the best of Scotland. Whether you are a member of the Skene family or simply a lover of Scottish history, the story of the wolf and the dirk is sure to capture your imagination and leave you with a deeper appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of Scotland.

I’m a descendant as well. I grew up going to the Scottish festival and representing our clan.
