Blackmailing though pictures and videos
Federal Investigation Agency is the premier agency of Pakistan at national level to investigate federal crimes including cyber crimes through social media apps and blackmailing through videos and pictures,
Cybercrime Wing CCW of Federal Investigation Agency, is guided by laws under prevention of Electronic Crimes ACT PECA 2016 ,
which deals with the growing threats of cybercrimes.
Inception of this Hi-Tech crime fighting unit transpired in 2007 to identify and curb the phenomenon of technological abuse in society.
It is the only unit of its kind in Pakistan which directly receives complaints and take legal measures against cyber criminals.
Example:
I did a video call on WhatsApp with an unknown girl, and she recorded the video. Now she and some of her contacts are blackmailing me that they would call the cops on me saying I have recorded her nude video. It is a scam group. What should I do?
answer:
This is a scam group and they are attempting to blackmail you.
Do not respond to their demands and do not pay them any money.
Report the group to WhatsApp or your local police department.
Increasing numbers of people fall victim to blackmail on social media. Yet, there has been little attempt
to synthesise research on this topic. This study seeks to address this gap by investigating what is
currently known about blackmail and the disclosure of sensitive information on social media. Two
rapid reviews were conducted and based on their findings those who disclose more information, are
younger, female and willing to use social media to create and distribute images are more likely to fall
victim to blackmail on social media. However, worry about privacy and the possibility of becoming a
victim of blackmail did not necessarily prevent the disclosure ofsensitive information on social media.
The implications of these findings for interventions and future research are discussed.
Keywords:
cybercrime
social media
blackmail
self-disclosure
social media crime
sensitive
information
The terms blackmail, extortion and sextortion are regularly used interchangeable, although
their meaning varies. Blackmail differs from extortion as extortion involves the use, or threatened use,
of force/violence to obtain cash or other valued commodities, while blackmail involves coercion by
threatening to expose information about the victim to others
IN 2016, the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) was introduced in Pakistan with the aim of curbing online offences, like fraud, cyber stalking and harassment. It is pertinent to analyse the practical implementation and effectiveness of this piece of legislation since its promulgation
Gender-based violence is defined by the United Nations as “violence that is directed against a woman because she is a woman or that affects woman disproportionately”
This includes physical, sexual and/or emotional harm. Gender-based cybercrimes include cyber stalking, cyber harassment and cyber bullying. All these offences have been described in PECA as avoidance of hate speech, unwanted online messages, making sexual and offensive advances through social networking websites.
It is significant to analyse several drastic negative effects on women of online harassment, such as depression, anxiety, decreased socialising, fear of harm or threats. All these need immediate medical attention and treatment through relevant professionals.
There are several recommendations that can be made to counter the online harassment issue. There should be cyber harassment awareness workshops and seminars.
Besides, parents should educate their children about the dos and don’ts of social media while giving them access to the internet. Finally, we need robust laws and their strict implementation regarding fake and dual accounts used for cyber harassment of any kind against anyone.
