Equip whatever you want, +HP items preferred though, and start in COM/RAV/MED to get Fang separated. Wait until you're fully healed or switch into SEN/MED/MED to heal and start building the gauge with SEN/RAV/RAV then.
With shrouds it should take no more than two or three of his attack chains to build up the gauge.
