The VW Beetle That's Also an RV I RIDICULOUS RIDES

PART Volkswagen, part camper - the ‘Super Bugger’ might not be your typical choice of car. But Canadian couple, Bill and Sandra, take great pride in owning this unique, rear converted camper vehicle that combines a VW Buggy and an RV into one. Back in the 1970s, a Californian company had the bright idea to convert the humble box into a piece of art – and they named it a ‘Super Bugger’ - it was later sold for $6,000. Sandra inherited the bugger after her father’s death, who bought the car back in the 80s. Speaking of her rare vehicle, Sandra told Barcroft TV: “She is my little girl, she is precious to me. It’s a fun vehicle to drive around!”

I'm glad to see this video. Back in the mid 70s my spouse became a salesperson for a Southern California company that made these. At that time it was called a "Bugaroo." I'm not sure if it was the same company as this one or if the name was changed along the way.

At any rate, we were asked to take one to an RV Show in Southern Oregon so we packed up and drove approximately 700 miles up I-5 then back after the show. While people were as excited then as some are in these comments there were so many drawbacks the spouse went to work for another RV company after our return.

I'll try to list them here. Structurally, they can't handle a strong crosswind. At one point we were on 2 wheels in a crosswind until we pulled over under an overpass to wait for the wind to die down. The windshield wipers were one speed, slow, and couldn't handle a heavy rain so we had to slow our speed dramatically.

Interior-wise, while cute, it's not practical for real or off the grid camping. There's no toilet or shower so you need to be near amenities or get so far out you're bathing in a lake or stream and digging your own facilities. There was no water heater so we had to heat water on the stove to wash dishes but we couldn't stand up to wash dishes or cook even with the table removed. The one we had had a 2 burner stove and tiny sink with a closet on one side and a small fridge on the other side. You couldn't open either one if you were sitting at the dinette. The roof vent had no fan and the windows on the doors didn't capture any breeze except a crosswind.

As a couple, we were 5'1" 115 lbs and 6'2" 230 lbs. Neither one of us could change clothes inside even with the table removed and the larger half of us couldn't stretch out on the bed. Lastly, there were no cupboards or drawers for pots, pans, dishes, utensils or canned or boxed goods so you're limited to what can fit on the dinette seats, in the trunk or in the sink while traveling. Just my experience but I think the above issues are why they didn't sell many and the company went out of business.

Edit to add, it couldn't climb a mountain pass very well either, we were in the far right lane chugging up the mountain with the 18 wheelers.

We saw this at Bruce's Market yesterday and fell in love with it ... as did at least a half-dozen others who pulled out their cell phones and snapped it. You made a lot of people smile. Cheers!

Imagine how crazy it would be if they came out with something like this today with a modern car

I have an old magazine on this but, tucked away somewhere, always wanted to make one, I see a young chap on YouTube with someone's take on a modern but.

Out of all the campers I've seen. It may not be the biggest but its by far the most amazing one I've seen. Would love to take this on a camp. Awesome little camper.
