Learn Spanish: Español or Castellano?

What is the correct name of the language? Español or castellano? In this video I will give you the information so you learn what are some of the differences between these two words. I say español. Some native Spanish speakers say "hablo español"; other native Spanish speakers say "hablo castellano. You might say castellano or español. Some of the reasons behind the confusion for these two terms are presented in this video. I will explain to you why some people say one, and others say the other. The reasons behind these two terms are historical. You see, Isabel de Castilla spoke castellano. But many shipmen who were in the crew of the yachts that got to America were not from Castilla, they were from other regions in Spain and the world and they did not specifically speak castellano, they spoke a mix, a soup of the different languages, dialects from all over Spain. There are some letters and sounds in Spanish that are pronounced different in Spain and in Latin America. You may notice that the Spanish letters "c" and "z" are pronounced as a "th" in Spain, especially in the central north part of the country, whereas in the south, in Andalucía, the sounds of these two letters of the Spanish alphabet are closer to the pronunciation in America. So, in Madrid , for instance, you might hear more castellano with that "th" sound. But in Andalucía you may not hear that very castilian "th" sound. In Barcelona, for instance, they speak catalán and español. Some other good examples of this difference is the "vosotros" compared to ustedes. The former used in the majority of Spain, and the central, northern region and ustedes used in America, in some parts of Andalucía and in the Canary Islands. This video is more a historic introductory note to these two terms native Spanish speakers use to refer to their language.
Mmmm, this already smells like mole. Like the sauce made of so many different ingredients so is the term español as it was made by different linguistic variants. But wait, I do not want to tell you the whole story in my sloppy writing. That is why I created the video, so go and watch it and see why some people say español and others castellano. I've always used Español, unless I'm referring to a word that is different in Spain than it is in Latin America; then I say "la palabra castellano...."

El castellano nació en Castilla, pero en la Castilla medieval de justo antes de la reconquista, en la zona de Cantabria, norte de España . Por eso el castellano tiene muchos vasquismos y las 5 vocales características. En el Reino de Aragón se hablaba aragonés y en los territorios de la corona aragonesa se hablaban otras lenguas, como el valenciano en el Reino de Valencia o el mallorquín en el Reino de Mallorca, además de catalán en los condados catalanes. En Valencia todavía nos referimos al español como castellano para diferenciarlo del valenciano, ambas lenguas españolas, pero vamos, que son sinónimos español y castellano. Cristóbal colón no se sabe a ciencia cierta si era italiano, de hecho hay teorías que apuntan a que era valenciano, catalán, portugués, gallego...lo cierto es Cristóbal Colón nunca habló italiano en sus escritos y sin embargo tiene dejes valencianos en sus escritos e incluso del portugués, pero es que su primera mujer fue portuguesa...

In Spain, many many people ask me if I speak Castellano mainly because there are so many different languages in Spain like Basque, Galician, Catalan so it’s sometimes important to differentiate.

Exacto lo explicaste muy bien, todos los dialecto del latín vulgar, se influenciaron mutuamente dando lugar a un estándar que oficializó en Reino de Castilla y León. Nebrija ya hablaba de lengua española o castellana pese a que España no estaba consolidad todavía. Por supuesto en la formación de la lengua tuvo importancia lenguas americanas.
