Description
The idea that “Software Is Eating the World” has been with us for over a decade. The flexibility and agility that it provides has been central to its impact on every industry and even to the process of its own production. Software development itself underwent a revolution through the Agile Movement, central to which was the shift in organizational dynamics embodied by DevOps, which was rooted in collaboration between development and operations teams to enable rapid, fluid delivery of software to customers. The DevOps organizational shift was enabled by Infrastructure As Code (IaC), the complementary technological shift that advocated for infrastructure provisioning and configuration to be automated through flexible, reliable software instead of complex, error-prone, manual processes. It unlocked speed and consistency in software development and deployment, between development and production. Together, DevOps and IaC as the paired organizational and technological shifts were the proverbial grease that streamlined software development.
Today, we see the movie replaying. Except, we are graduating from a Software (driven) World to a Data (driven) World. DataOps has emerged as the organizational mindset shift essential to unlocking the value of data in the enterprise. What will be the concomitant technological shift that will enable the modern, data driven enterprise? We posit that Data Transformation will be the accompanying parallel, technological shift in the data world that will enable rapid creation and reconfiguration of advanced analytics using software and in a manner that preserves consistency between development and production.
