It's basically the blues scale and Dorian put together.

Dimebag would actually sometimes Palm mute the first three notes and then play the second set of the same three notes unmuted. He would also pick the first three since they are Palm muted and hammer on the next three before moving on to the next string. You can hear this in cowboys from hell and psycho holiday. So the first three would be picked starting with a down stroke and the next three would be hammer-ons starting with an upstroke. He would repeat this all the way up the scale.

It falls into Pandiatonic Harmony. A symmetrical run (typically harmonically sequenced, as opposed to melodically); it's a scale fragment expressed with the circle of 4th's, to quote another.

The solo is over an E minor pentatonic based progression, colored with a couple of diminished intervals (relative to the root) - especially the C# minor (essentially half diminished vii∅) diad [C# + E] during the 3rd bar (12 beat) of the chord progression, and reinforced by the chord progression's cadence in the 4th bar that employs the flatted 5 (Bb). Flatted 5 has a diminished harmonic relation to the C# minor diad root →
E (root) + Bb (flat 5) + C# (6m)

The truly amazing thing about this solo is the harmonic complexity he adds with his leads. The dissonance of diminished intervals is resolved by the harmonic congruence of the root note in the chord progression. This added diminished spice opens up a range of creative harmonic possibilities when embellishing leads bc of the harmonic content provided by the unique intervallic relationship of the notes.

I was blessed with taking lessons from him and having a great freindship with him in the late 80s ... heard CFH, Domination, And Cemetery Gates, which I believe Darrell got that style of writing from me, all of these with I vocals, the guitar solo of cemetery gates was ripped thru 3Mini Marshal Stacks in his mom's garage...with no Overdubs
