I live in Cedar Rapids. Glad to see this start to get attention. It’s a mess here, most of the city is still without power after 5 days. The couple pictures of downed trees and damaged homes don’t show the scale of this. It’s literally the entire city that looks like this. I’ve read that 1/2 of the trees here have been damaged. The wind was so strong that it ripped trees out of the ground and unto houses and power lines.

This was absolutely terrifying to go through! We had a 45 minute warning on what was coming. This storm lasted nearly an hour. Beyond grateful for having a basement since a tree fell on my house. We're one of the lucky ones that have power now since many of my friends and family are still without electricity. Gas is hard to come by. Generators and chainsaws are nowhere to be found. We'll take all the help we can get in Iowa...

A derecho “ is a widespread, long-lived, straight-line wind storm that is associated with a fast-moving group of severe thunderstorms” I learned something new today 😎

I’m from NE Iowa and thankfully lived through that!! I have a new empathy for anyone who has experienced a hurricane. This was unlike any storm I and many people have ever seen/experienced in Iowa (or the Midwest for that matter) and I hope we never do again! 😨 Relentless is the word that comes to mind. Still no power as of today and typing this by lamplight. I’m in the second largest city which still looks disastrous and we have lots of cleanup and crews working around the clock to get power up and running (thanks to them!!) I’m encouraged by how people are pulling together and how neighbors are helping each other, but I believe it’s going to take more help than that to recover fully! Thanks for your prayers everyone! ❤️💕

It hit my community in Newton Iowa (Mon 8/10) and many are still without power which means no groceries and no gas. Our town has stepped up. Neighbor helping neighbor. We had gusts of 140 mph. It took out brick buildings and threw very large trees up and out of the ground like they were nothing. For the most part we've all lost are fridge and freezer foods. All that said God is merciful. Not one injury directly from the storm. We had been preparing for some time now for a disaster so we were good other than the perishables but oh well. I think he's trying to wake us up. Friday morning when my alarm went off I heard Mark, my words several times. Not mark my words. I opened my Bible to Mark and the first thing Jesus says is that the time has been fulfilled and the Kingdom of God is at hand, repent and believe in the gospel. God bless us all. Pay attention. There's a YouTube channel sott media that has been compiling natural disasters going on in the world for several months. Absolutely amazing. Keep your eyes on the sky, big things are heading all of our way.

I lived northwest of des moines and we had no warning at all. The whole neighborhood was outside playing on a nice day. Then all of a sudden we had to run. Came out of nowhere.

History repeats its self. This sounds like the dust bowl that happened in the 1930s that destroyed farmers crops

What is really frustrating is that so many people's houses have been deemed unliveable but tonight is the first night there is an overnight shelter! 6 Days After the Derecho! 😡

I think for many of us this is the first time we've heard of a "derecho." It's astounding that I actually learned something from the news for once.

The disaster response in Iowa has been a complete failure. Took 7 days to get the national guard involved. After 24 hours there should have been trucks with free food, water, and gas. The entire CR metro over 200, 000 people lost 100% electricity. No phone service. No gas stations. Nothing. And it took a week for them to decide there was an emergency!?!?

Anyone else here never heard of a “derecho” until you saw this video?
