A fictitious name is also known as doing business as. It's when an LLC or a business decides that they're going to open up a subsidiary or perform lower functions and they want to use a different name. Let's say you want a different branch of your company to do a different function. You could designate a different name, so that the subsidiary entity could carry on its own business separately from the name of the main LLC.
