David Burkus on how to manage poor performance. Poor performance at work happens for one of two reasons: it's either the system or the employee. The first thing you need to do is figure out if it's the system and, if so, what you need to do to change. If it's the employee, it may still be a capabilities issues and you may need to fight for more training. If it's a motivational issue, however, then the poor performance is unlikely to resolve and it's time to talk about finding a new role OR a new company.
