SMT was originally just called Megami Tensei because it was a licensed property, as you said. When ATLUS wanted to do their own thing with the series, they added "Shin", meaning true. That's why it's named that. The translation of the name means something like "Rebirth of the Goddess".

Also I'm pretty sure you can get Dante on the Switch version of Nocturne.
