I spent 5 awful weeks in Shenzhen China for a job. The building I lived in was being gutted for underground apartments. They were literally digging the foundation of the building away day and night. I quit the job and got out of there, FAST! China is famous for cheap short cuts like these.

No foundations, inadequate drainage. Nothing structural, this is why houses and roads collapse

It's so clear that those pipes only got build half of the length it's supposed to be made, and because of this, the water will leaking out from the pipes and it is making the soil become soft and the consequences is what we see.

Insufficient engineering and soil studies will do that to you.

When underground are hollow, then a sinkhole is of course to be formed. That car was lucky to have a solid ground formation under it else it would have been sunk by this time .

To all those roasting China, we built enduring infrastructure due to the New Deal, back when the top earners were being taxed 90% over base. That work lasted until now, and is crumbling every day. We've done almost no maintenance since and new build is little better than what you're looking at.

Yeah.. This stuff happens more often in the U.S. (sink holes swallowing entire streets, entire side walks and streets exploding, bridge collapsing etc etc.. Happens so often, it's not even news worthy anymore.)
I remember when parts of NYC looked like one big pot hole back in the school days.
How do you know this is rare thing in the region? Simple, it's rare enough That the media reported on it.
