As a year 12 student it took me 10 minutes to do this and personally this is just ridiculous for a GCSE paper. I think the hardest part is figuring out where to even begin

I just don't appreciate that the whole paper or some questions of it were leaked before the exam, and Edexcel will take appropriate measures, but it just destroys all the satisfaction and pride I felt in myself in being able to do that question without any form of cheating. There were many ways of doing this question anyway because I had a separate method but that correctly got me to the answer as well.

There is so much backlash to Edexcel for featuring such a hard last question which I personally wasn't taught about at all and I was a bit confused when I tried to do it in the paper I only wrote the area of one circle and did some other stuff which was incorrect.

I wrote down the area of one circle hope I get one mark for working

Its MUCH simpler to look at the area of the equilateral triangle that mainly covers one of the shaded areas Shaded area = 1 equilateral triangle minus one segment.
One equilateral triangle = 4 root3 and one segment = 1/6pir^2 - 4root3. subtract segment from triangle and double!

Once you see how to do it it's simple. I only looked at it for about a minute before giving up however but I'm in my 3rd year of university studying aerospace engineering. So I'd say yeah for a gcse paper that requires a bit of clever thinking. Not gona be easy for everyone to get that

I'm predicted a grade 9 and this question had me baffled. I wrote 8/3 of pi (which was only for one of them smh) and now need make sure I do better on the other two 😭

oh god i remember this too well. after the exam we showed it to our maths teachers as you usually do and the maths department working together couldt solve this dumb question. and i knew some people who did maths tests backwards since you just get the hard questions out of the way, they opened the paper and just saw THAT

I get that this is tough but to be fair it’s not *that* tough. It’s level 9, the top 3% of the country. Level 9 isn’t always something that can be taught, it’s intended to reveal genuine talent and flare for a subject.

This question is simply a combination of equilateral triangles and segments - with concentration you can do it in your head (yes, I’m a maths teacher). It’s challenging but we shouldn’t complain about challenge.

Honestly this question was wild to come in GCSE especially cuz they dont teach this. I'm an AS student which is why I knew how to do it

Honestly, it's not that difficult. I don't get why is everyone saying it's impossible.

Even in Yr 12 the questions are much simplier than this

There is a major gap in the GCSE syllabus which does not cater for solving these types of problem. That is solving geometry puzzle style problems. There is an entire group of people out there who love these problems, they dont require much math theory but difficult to crack. GCSE math has none of thst. There should be a chapter on solving geometry problems where student practice solving geometry problems if you are to expect them to tackle this question in 5 minutes.

I’m year 11 and some people thought this was horrible but it’s just common sense

You only have to know the formulas for the area of a circle and the area of a triangle, both should be simple at GCSE level.

I don't even know where to start this, but then again earn 50k a year, have paid my mortgage off, so I don't really care

the true thing about this question is that the wording of the question was tough thats what got me overthinking wtf is this question

I'm really annoyed at myself for not getting it... I literally drew in the radii, labelled them all and didn't make the connection that it was equilateral.

oh ffs if i aren't sick of seeing these vids lol why are you all doing it in the most monstrous way?? 4x4=16divby2=8 so (16) and (8) are the two numbers you need to apply (pi) job done ffs XD
