I watched several videos about pruning apples trees, this one is perfect for beginners, very easy to catch and reassured

I like fall pruning, as it allows 1st year growth limbs to become stronger, plus it makes fruiting buds start and get a chance to set before winter. If you don't it can be 2-3 years later to make fruiting buds. It also allows you to have good fruiting buds closer to the main tree structure instead of out on the end of a limb. You can make better scaffolding, on laterals, and you can direct the tree outward "The Importance of Summer Pruning" is a good video on YouTube explaining this. I do leave a few for graphing the next year, or air layering to start a new tree of that species.

Great simple video. Don't be afraid is the key thing I learned.

In upstate NY still below freezing on March 8th. For personal reasons, I could not do the pruning prior to today. I hope I did well by our four variety apple trees by pruning today.

What a terrific way to inhibit bacterial infections in your trees. ❤

So i got a funky non central leader tree with like 6 main stems coming from a trunk thats almost 24in in diameter (zero clue on graft and root stock varieties), one of which could be considered central as its the most vertical and centered one.
Im mainly wondering if i should just prune each "non central leader" the same as a central leader or would this shape require a different approach.

I dont think cutting off the non central stems would be good due to their age and diameter, it'd just be super stressful for the tree id think. If anything that should've been done years ago.
I definitely need to prune out a lot of vertical and top sucker growth as the canopy is now growing into the bottom of my large maple, the apple tree is like between 20 and 30 feet if i had to guess. Just dont have a ladder tall enough to get to em safely. I do remove what suckers and overly shaded/shading branches i can, but aside from suckers ive held off on shaping and pruning mainly because central leaders seem to be the "standard" and whatever is going on with mine has me scratching my head a bit lol.

Its an awesome tree, thing probably produces enough apples to fill most of a standard pickup bed all on its own. Its just way too tall too work with and shades itself out a lot too (the two massive maples dont help with the shade they make). Not sure what the previous owner was intending for it, but we havent properly pruned it in like six years since we never had apple trees and didnt want to hack it. Im used to citrus which is its own ball park of fruit growing from apples im sure.

Good advice. Do you shorten the length of branches in winter?

Is it too late to prune the apple trees when they starting to bud? What will happen to them if I prune them? Thx

Best thing I bought was a pair of Felco F4 for pruning fruit trees.

How about pruning the height, I cut my center branch at about 15 ft.

When you prune off a branch, should it be done in the crotch or right in the middle of the branch?

Does the 45° angle also apply to columnar trees?

I’ve heard that you should avoid cutting more than 25-30 percent. Is that something you’re concerned with?
Also do you avoid topping or is it better to keep the tree manageable?
