As an Ironworker apprentice in the mid 70s I was asked to start a large welding machine. I circled it three times looking for the start button. Finally went to the foreman, "boy ya got to hand crank it". "Watch for the kick back, it might break your arm". I was careful..

For your own edification, look up how to start a International TD-6 on the crank. Starts on Gasoline to warm up and switches to diesel. Also early Caterpillars had a "pony" motor small gasoline engine that would run and turn the diesel to both warm it and crank it for running. All good motorhead stuff.

WHAT ARE YOU talking about "push don't pull??" You PULL UP you do not PUSH

My great grandfather always said to crank it open handed because when it caught, it could break you arm.

pull not push. turn 1/4 to 1/2 revolution at a time with an open palm thumb tucked in.
pushing will break a bone if the timing is not set correctly

I as always told pull with an open grip, never push just in case there was a kickback. I experienced my first kickback (my fault) about 4 weeks ago and I've been starting this tractor for 20 plus years. The entire arm was numb for about 3 minutes. If i had been pushing it probably would have broken my ribs or jaw. Nothing like pulling 400 cubes over 1/4 at a time.
