How to Replace Your Idler Pulley Bearing Easily

When it came time to replace the pulley bearing on my cars, I always bought a new pulley with bearing pressed in. But I recently realized you can save money by pressing in a new bearing. I tried this out recently while helping a friend with her 2002 Mustang and it worked great. Cost of the Japanese bearing was about $10 on Amazon.

Torque specification for this pulley on the 2002 Mustang is 22 ft lbs.

I am surprised this doesn't have more views. This is a great video. He hits all the important parts. Granted the difference in cost of new pulley with bearing in it and only the beating is 5 bucks, but these same principles can be applied to any sealed bearing on the car. Good job.

I always consider if changing the entire tensioner just for the bearing is necessary. Unfortunately there isn't a tensioner pulley sold individually and the only choice is to change a bearing. Thank you for the video; this is pretty helpful.

HI there, thanks for the great video. I have a 2001 Wrangler TJ with 4.0l engine with a noisy water pump pully, but it appears you can't but just buy the pully anymore and a new water pump looks to come without the pully. I've not removed the water pump / pully yet, so not sure if there is a bearing installed, but I guess that's how pulleys work. Will this bearing replacement work for the water pump pulley as well? Will it be the same / similar process? Appreciate some advice please. Thanks

This is a very interesting video. That is the same kind of bearing they use in newer BMX bottom brackets that the cranks run through. They have 3 different size bore diameters. 19, 22, and 24. The one in the video looks like 19.

You used the standard size 6203-2RS bearing but my question is did you use one with the addition C3 rating?
