We NEVER taught that! | #LDS #Mormon #RollTheTape

In a recent video with @jubilee, Tember made the assertion that "There are many members of the church who have this mindset that when the Prophet speaks the debate is over and you should just not think about it, and that's not right. I, honestly, I think that is cultish, but that is not what the church has taught over time"

The facts say otherwise.

🎶Follow the prophet, follow the prophet, follow the prophet, don’t go astray 🎶

Obedience was encouraged heavily when I was young. I consistently ignored myself to do what I was told. That never made me happy.

"Roll the tape"... love it! And don't forget, "the prophet will never lead you astray!"

I am 63, l have heard " When the Prophet speaks, the debate is over."
more times than l can count. It's not a mindset. It's something they repeatedly drilled into us.

I love it when Nemo says, “Roll the tape.” It is always a mic drop moment.

You are 100% correct. Anything spoken at conference is then echoed in sacrament meetings and lessons over and over.

Exactly what the church has and STILL teaches. It's always been this way.

I really don't understand what the point of a prophet is if he can be wrong about anything or even if he is wrong about one thing. What if that one thing is, who you can/can't marry, the temple ceremonies, tithing, trans people, who can have the priesthood, etc...

It is such a joke that people can talk so firmly about what is wrong and right but then turn around and say that not even the prophet of the church knows what is wrong or right.

I am 78 ~ have served as Relief Socioty President, young women’s president, primary president, gospel doctrine teacher, ward missionary & more ~~~you get the picture ( in two countries& several States) This is what was taught in our manuals, our lessons, the Conference, , church magazines . This was key there are so many things now that we are being gaslit on ~ they’re “ They weren’t doctrine, wasn’t didn’t happen” we “just ~misunderstood it “ . I have an amazing memory ~ so much loss ~so much cost ~so much betrayal~ can’t get those years back ~ i gave “ It” my all and “ it” failed me ~ sad ~ Very Sad

And then there’s Oaks saying not to criticize church leaders even if the criticism is true. I mean how is it someone raise in the church misses what the church actually teaches?

For all that "follow the prophet" goodness, see Ezra Taft Benson's 1980 talk, "Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet." I was made to study this talk at BYU (more than 20 years ago, but . . .), and the same attitude is pervasive today. I can still hear my stake president's voice in my head saying "when the Prophet speaks, the debate is over, " from just a few years ago.
These young apologists simply don't know their own religion.

“when the prophet speaks, the thinking is done.” This statement originally appeared in the Improvement Era, in June 1945.

Though the message is “dated”, I believe it is deeply planted in the minds of a lot of members. I tested it with friends and all of them said they would follow the prophet, even if that looked like jumping off a cliff. No sense in trusting in God or even your God-given instincts/personal revelation, and go to Him with questions/confirmations. No, don’t use your brain. Just trust someone else because “they will not lead you astray” and there is safety in that sentiment. Now that is a “lazy learner”!

I was taught that since I was young. It's a blatant lie to say that the church doesn't teach this.

I would argue that this attitude is perpetuated for all priesthood leaders--when they speak, Mormon folk--especially women and children-- are supposed to just obey.

Hard to believe I was a part of this...goodness gracious.

"When our leaders speak, the thinking has been done. When they propose a plan–it is God’s plan. When they point the way, there is no other which is safe. When they give direction, it should mark the end of controversy. God works in no other way. To think otherwise, without immediate repentance, may cost one his faith, may destroy his testimony, and leave him a stranger to the kingdom of God." Improvement Era June 1945

Sounds culty AF
