For Western audiences. Akira may have cracked the door into anime for the viewers, but Dragonball Z kicked the door down that got the western world interested in anime. People forget that DBZ had already ended in 1996 and the manga before that. It wasn't until Cartoon Network's Toonami that was able to show DBZ to western audiences. I remember coming home in the late 90's by 400 and watching DBZ of the Sayian saga and the first half of the Namek saga over and over. It wasn't until 1999 when Funimation got the licensing from Toei to finish out the Namek saga. That's what got me hooked.

Gundam, Macross and Slam Dunk should be included. Gundam and Macross popularized the mecha genre while Salm Dunk popularized basketball especially in Asia. Salm Dunk creator Takehiko Inoue is considered an icon in Japan and has received awards for what he did

Yeah, if your anime managed to get referenced in a Calvin and Hobbes strip, you know you've made an impact.

Aw man, AKIRA, Dragon Ball series, Pokemon, Cowboy Bebop, Sailor Moon, One Piece, Evangelion, the list goes on. I thank my Godfather and cousin for getting me into Anime and making it an important part of my childhood.

Cowboy Bebop is a certified classic! To this day, its score, characters, and dialogue doesn’t skip a beat with its sci-fi storytelling!

Pokémon was the first anime I’ve ever watched before Dragon Ball Z. The first anime movie I watched that isn’t Pokémon related has been Spirited Away.

One Piece - Eiichiro Oda created one of the most expansive worlds in Anime. Literally anything is possible in One Piece & nearly every fight has been beyond epic. 🙆🏿‍♂️🙆🏻‍♀️

OI, MOJO, WHERE IS STUDIO GHIBLI!? They pioneered the genre, spirited away was the first anime film to win an Oscar and the boy and the heron just won an Emmy. If you’re going to leave so many great contributions out, make a top 20.

Initial D single handily brought car culture and drifting to the world. I think it deserved a spot on the list.

My older siblings grew up with Mazinger Z, Voltron and Transformers. I grew up with Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon, Digimon, Flint the Time Detective, Mon Colie Knights, Monster Rancher, Shaman King, Escaflowne and One Piece. These aired on analog TV and when the switch to digital came all of them were removed and placed on cable.

You missed Star Blazers, or Battleship Yamato, Ghost in the Shell, Demon City, and Ninja Scroll just to name a few. Not sure you realize how hard it was to get anime back in the early 80's and 90's. I was lucky enough to know and work with someone from the Philippines who could get me the latest anime back then.
