Designed as a spatial piece using over 400 speakers.
Eventually modern technologies such as synthesizers, electronic instruments, and computers were used in electronic music.
Varese, however, composed this piece primarily using the tape recorder.
He recorded many sounds, manipulated them on tape, and mixed them in various tracks and combinations.
He influenced other significant composers including Pierre Boulez, Luigi Dallapiccola, and Pierre Schaeffer.
Boulez and Shaffer in particular were known for electronic compositions while Dallapiccola was primarily known for 12 tone compositions in the style of Schoenberg.
