Just finished my first dot and dab project. We used to have wood paneling in our hallway and up the stairs. It was pretty rough so decided to rip it all down. This left bare brickwork. Very ugly brickwork at that. We got a few plasterers in for quotes for the job and all of them just took a sharp intake of breath and failed to even give a price. In the end I opted to dot and dab with 9mm plasterboard.

Coincidentally I was also using Knauf Adhesive. This stuff was an absolute joy to work with. I also used the adhesive for gap filling. I then used multifinish to do the jointing. The original plan was to then call back the plasterers to quote for a skim coat but after sanding the joints, it seemed pretty good. So I gave it a mist coat and it then became obvious that no skim coat was going to be required (at least not for now).

I know it is an awkward space to work on (our staircase has a 90 degree turn half way up) And one section of the wall is almost the entire two stories in height, but I invested the first days work building a platform (just a box of 4 stairs upside down) that sits on the stairs. Along with a ladder this made it possible to access all areas. I started with the boards that sit up high. I mounted a batton on the wall to temporarly sit their bottom edge on. The next day I removed the batton and fitted the lower boards.

I wish now I'd videod the whole project but I never realised I was going to do the whole job myself. First it was "just remove the panelling then get plasterers in". Then it was, "Just dot and dab it, then get the plasterers in" then finally it was. "Who needs them anyway?" This was a job I really didn't want to do myself so I'm really pleased to be done with it. It wasn't just the plastering though. The door liners on the lower floor all had to be trimmed back by about an inch (the old wood panelling took more space than the plasterboard) and they are about an inch and half thick. The phone line and our network cabling needed to be rerouted. I had to renovate some of the old plaster coving. (made a former from aluminium backed up with wood, filled in the broken pieces using plasterboard adhesive then multifinish for the last couple of coats) The former worked great to get an accurate profile.

I'm still a bit self consious that below the paint it's just plasterboard, so I may get a plasterer in, to give it a skim if it ever gets a few digs.

You should try out dewalt’s vortex whisk it’s awesome for mixing up with its pukka the plaster down towards the bottom of the bucket so it generally mixes a lot quicker than any other whisk no matter what mixer body you use but I have a dewalt cordless mixer they’re good

Wickes do a 75l blue bucket which is a lot tougher than the yellow buckets and they are cheaper than anywhere else.

Top vid! Can I ask is it ok to use knauf adhesive with hypericum boards?? Or should you match boards with manufacturers adhesive??

Hi Anthony, with this method do you need to prime the walls first (pva).
Many thanks.

If your only sticking 3 boards for 2 bags of bonding, I hope you never have to take a board off

I get the adhesive idea but if it fails your !@#$ why not nail some 1×2to the wall screw the board to that then skim it 👍
