Small Cars Are Awesome

Small cars offer driving at its purest. No distractions, no excess, just the bare minimum needed for enjoyment. Sadly, they're becoming a thing of the past...

You can spend a million pounds on a Veyron and never ever push it anywhere near its limits - or a few hundred on a Matiz 800 or a Panda Twin air and spend all your time on the ragged edge - one bleeds your bank account dry, one doesn't even threaten your license - go figure.

I absolutely like small cars. I like their practicality and safety for other road users like pedestrians.

My dream car was once a Mustang GT but when I discovered this compact cars.... It made me think that "big isn't always better"

Skoda Citigo 1.0L 59hp, my first car and it does exactly everything I need, heck it even has Bluetooth and black alloys . And it also uses almost zero fuel 🙌🏻😁

I love my lovely VW Up, it's fun to drive, but also fairly safe and comfortable; simple yet modern. Great car.

That's why I bought a Fiat 500. Only modern car that gives you that "classic, revy, light" car feeling. Love it.

I have always liked small cars, and over the last 20 years I've had quite a few. Today, cars are generally bigger, but you can still have fun. For a giggle, I tried a Fiat Panda Twinair, thinking it would be awful to drive. That engine was so full of character, in a tall, boxy little city car. It made me grin from the first moment. Such an unpretentious car. The same engine in a Fiat 500 didn't have quite the same effect.

Absolutely agree with all the points mentioned. There are people who just can't afford a BMW, a Jaguar or such. But they need a vehicle to get them from A to B. That is when these come into play. Most of them are old, are a relic, are even a challenge to get proper parts for, but in exchange are sturdy, dependable, and go around on fumes. Plus as they are relics, they may even get a better wooing at the proper place at the proper time (car shows) than big, fat, loud cars would.
I always smile when the memory surfaces; a colleague was making a rude joke about me being a newly licensed driver, my foot would be heavy ... when I told him I got 45 mpg last time I took a trip home, and came back to my place ... he just left .... cut his speech, cut his laughter out, and left in shame :D ... my little shitbox ('05 Hyundai Accent) beat his SUV or whatever.
Small cars are a thing of the past, but damn are they fun in every aspect!

Joe, you've just hit the nail on the head there with every reason I've ever been a fan of small cars. 70 mph feels way faster in a tiny gutless wonder than it does in something bigger where you're numb to the speed you're doing and you're not aware of the danger of the speed.

You could not be more spot on. Recently bought a Suzuki Celerio. Low power, low torque, and what it does deliver is high in the rev range. Loads and loads of fun. No power and 165/65 x 14 tyres makes for great fun on the ragged edge.

Living in Japan, Kei-Cars are still keeping the real small car size but with techs of S Class.

Wish these were more mainstream, better on gas, cheaper to own and good enough to be on the road. I can't stand having to use so much money on gas just to go to the grocery store.

I once owned a Suzuki Front'e car.
It was tiny, but had 4 doors and was powered by a 3 cylinder 360cc 2 stroke rear mounted engine.
It would cruise happily at 100kph all day.
Other small cars I've owned are: 1936 Austin 7,
Standard 10, Reliant supervan, Subaru Justy, Renault 4, Fiat Cinquecento, Toyota Fun cargo, Toyota Ractis, Nissan cube.
All great fun!
'Multum in parvo', ( much in little).

Why I love my Twingo daily. Yes the engine's in the boot and it can't pull the skin off a rice pudding. Yet in the twisty country lanes of Lancashire it is an absolute hoot, again 60 odd brake but its as light as a tinned fart with quite aggro looks and all the kit you need.

Citroen 2cv, Renault 4 ( and 5 of course!), Mini, Peugeot 205, VW Polo, ... we've all had 'em, mine was a 1.0L Austin Metro A693 VOX. Happy days. The old ones were easy to service yourself too. Not sure you can say that about any of today's small cars. For some of them you even have to go to the dealer to change a headlamp bulb 😳.
