Secularism was born in the Enlightenment, the Age of Reason, just like Conservatism.

Although today the need for ideas to be evidenced and rational is accepted 300 years ago ideas were justified as 'divinely ordained' and questioning this was punished by imprisonment. Only once logical thinking was widespread could ossified religious orthodoxy be pushed to one side and scientific thinking take its place, leading to the Industrial Revolution.

However many brave men and women had to wage a long struggle against the Church of England's grip on the nation, and all too often were imprisoned for 'blasphemy' i.e daring to say Jesus Christ was not the son of God. This is their story.
