This Will Make Your Jazz Licks 10x Better

You already know how to find the scales and arpeggios that go with the chords, and you can play Jazz licks on each of the chords, but your solos still sounds very much like you are just playing something on each chord, and when you listen to great players like Wes then you hear a whole melody in the solo, not just something on Dm7 and something else on A7.

In this video, I am going to show you how to improve the skills that make it possible for you to play a solo that is a complete piece of music and not a bunch of random lines next to each other.

Content:
0:00 Intro
0:40 Beethoven, Muddy Waters and Kurt Rosenwinkel - 5 Examples
0:59 The raw material for strong melodies
1:39 Beethoven inspired II V I lick
2:50 Muddy Waters playing Changes
3:40 Creatively Voice-leading Motifs
4:44 How To Practice and internalize this
5:20 Stubborn Rosenwinkel Habits
6:54 Reverse Rosenwinkel with a motif
7:34 Adding Alterations (like Benson)

My name is Jens Larsen, Danish Jazz Guitarist, and Educator. The videos on this channel will help you explore and enjoy Jazz. Some of it is how to play jazz guitar, but other videos are more on Music Theory like Jazz Chords or advice on how to practice and learn Jazz, on guitar or any other instrument.

The videos are mostly jazz guitar lessons, but also music theory, analysis of songs and videos on jazz guitars.

Love your videos and love this one very much. Especially the Benson inspired voice leading part towards the end. I’ve been working on that a lot lately, inspired by Charlie Parker who seems to have done it frequently, especially like your example with a minor seven flat five on the seventh of the dominant chord resolving to the upper structure of the following cord. Applying that concept to transcriptions of his solos aids interpretation very much. Such a beautiful sound. Thank you!

I found if you play cmaj7 to Bbmajor C for 4 beats and Bb for for 4 and run scales from 3rd fret to 12th fret play melody from 3rd fret to 12 fret helps

How do you get the 3rd arpeggio ? If the key is C should the 3rd be E minor?

Thanks this was very helpful! I just had a question about gear real quick. So I have a fender super reverb(4x10s), but I think it’s to big to play with a big band or in a combo. This question seems dumb, but I just wanna know what you think. Thanks

Hi Jens. As always this is a great video and I have learned a lot from it already. Your voice sounds great. Can you tell me how you are recording it? What mic are you using?

Jens, PLEASE, something different than the C major scale. Doesn't have to be exotic, . A key of G, F, or stretch to a D major would be fine. Anything other than the C natural.... Other than that, another great video !!!
