The little holes on the face look like the same type mesh they used in the 60's to put tile in showers. I had to tear some out of my house. It was so strong that I had to cut it with a diamond saw first, then pry on it. It still was alot of work, even after cutting. The mesh held the plaster and didn't break when I applied force with a huge prybar.

The wholes could be something like a "bush hammer technique. As a man who has done large-scale industrial concrete projects. It looks like a hole you would dump concrete into to provide a structural bond for an outer layer. The weight of an outer layer of sculpture plaster would be great, having holes to provide more volume and a better attachment is a possibility.

Hi, the smaller holes probably are to do with construction and they could also be to help the plaster or whatever.

Any large concrete structure needs air for it to dry more quickly, take for instance Boulder Dam now known as Hoover Dam in the US, nearly 600 miles of steel pipes woven through the concrete blocks significantly reduced the chemical heat from the setting for the concrete. The holes in the statues could have been where steel pipes were placed and the steel has since corroded away.

Cement and concrete are not the same thing. Cement is in concrete. These are cemented concrete structures. 😎

Is it possible that thousands of years ago they worked like sculptors and used wooden poles for climbing and attaching geopolymer? It looks like they applied layer after layer of geopolymer and then polished and painted it. So much for chiseling or tapping and hammering.
So they still build temples and Buddha statues here in SE Asia where I live and I can watch them. But they don't use geopolymer. They use cement!
