World fastest car: Hennessey Venom GT - 270.49 mph |435.31 km/h

On February 14, 2014, the Hennessey Venom GT set a new world speed record for 2-seat sports cars by reaching a top speed of 270.49 mph (435.31 km/h).

The test was performed at the John F. Kennedy Space Center on the 3.2-mile Space Shuttle landing runway. Brian Smith, Director of Miller Motorsports Park, drove the Venom GT to its record speed.

Hennessey also claims the car could exceed its recorded 270.49 mph top speed if there was a longer stretch of road, as the car continued accelerating when it ran out of runway.

Besides claiming the world's speed record of 270.49 miles per hour, the Hennessey Venom GT has also been able to accelerate from zero to 200 miles per hour in 14.51 seconds, setting another world record for acceleration.

The Venom GT has a twin turbo-charged 7.0-liter, V-8 engine, which produces up to 1,244 horse power at 6,500 rpm.

Hennessey recorded a 270.49-mph, but only in one direction. To be considered legitimate, record attempts usually require one run in each direction. An average is then taken to account for wind conditions.

It was disqualified from the Guinness record because it only performed its top speed run in one direction and only sold 29 cars at the time, failing to meet the 50 car quota to be classified as a production car. Because of its hand-built nature, there’s also some debate about whether it qualifies as a production car.

The Venom GT costs $1.2 million US Dollars plus shipping and not including options.
