Fascinating. I just love how everything is so polite and courteous, asking whats up and shaking hands and all. People should be more like dial up connections.

That graph is a beautiful thing.!!  Really.!! it shows the different frequencies the connecting modem is transmitting and the handshake procedure as it happens...  GREAT capture..!  Well done..!!! And I believe this was a 44khz connect too..!!

I love that every user operating this system is able to hear and see the troubleshooting information while the connection is being accessed. Nowadays you press the connect button and hope that it actually did something. When it doesn't work you have to go down a rabbit hole to diagnose a simple issue

Nice throwback... I'm old enough to have heard and compared the sound of various modems person ever the years as they upgraded speeds. The sounds are unique! Would be neat to see the difference ones analyzed.

Love it. You would hold your breath for that first 13 seconds and it was so satisfying when it completed. You did not hear phase three though with any of the modems I used. That was the point where you logged into AoL or Compuserve. Happy memories ;-)

We used to be able to tell how fast your modem was connecting by the tones. This wasn't quite accurate but would have been around a 33.6 connection since it is missing the insanely quick usr x2 handshake and protocol tone or the k56flex tone and the multiple variations of the far more popular v.90 tones required for a 56k connection. Most people were more familiar with the x2 handshake or the v.90 tones because so few ISPs actually had k56flex enabled since it was the lower quality of the 56k protocols.

Boy that's a blast from the past. I haven't heard that since I was a kid. We didn't use the internet much, dial-up took ten years to load a single website.
