MPV Trans Swap (Christmas Special) - Part 1

My rusty trusty 1989 Mazda MPV refuses to die, but second gear went missing at 243k miles. Kind of annoying to drive without second gear in hilly central PA!

Let's swap out the tired transmission to a low-mileage junkyard unit and get the MPV back on its feet :)

A used transmission is cheaper than getting a windshield washer reservoir replaced on a Honda CRV haha

I think it's great that you can keep this MPV on the road with a good used transmission for 300 dollars in parts. If another person, say me, had to pay the labor just to do that swap, it wouldn't be worth it. That's the beauty of being about to do it yourself.

Really enjoying this Ivan. Watching you finesse that trans out while lying on the ground reminded my of how I've done things my whole life. Yeah Ivan back in the day I would get directly underneath the trans and bench press it right away from the engine. Bring it down on your chest and then roll it off to the side. Lol

I'm impressed, you had the Panache to do this without a transmission jack. If I did it that way I could imagine the whole transmission doing a roll crash to one side as I scrambled to get clear.

I smiled when I saw all those extensions added together to reach the bolts. We do what we must right? You have a good excuse to buy another extension now. Nice floor lift placement. You were thinking ahead! You need this vehicle so you can remain mobile and get to Staten Island. I'll be back for part two!

Roll it outside, Gunk and power rinse while you can. It's actually beneficial- to flush/drain your water heater at least 3x year. Run water 5 mins, turn thermos to HIGH HOT. Wait for shut off (20 mins) while Gunk is working. Steam clean engine stuff AND new trans. Wheel it back inside, readjust your water heater back to before. Let dry. Fluid Film the entire undercarriage area, where you can't get later. Clean stuff is always nice to work on.
