Why Everyone Wants Stinger Missiles

Stinger missiles have shot down around 270 aircraft, and here’s how soldiers fire them.

Stingers are air-defense missiles with an infrared guidance system that can destroy aircraft such as helicopters, low altitude planes, and unmanned aerial vehicles at altitudes of up to 12,500 feet in mere seconds. It only costs around $120,000 per unit too, which is on the low-end for missiles and a steal when compared to the multimillion dollar aircraft they can take out.

To fire, the gunner tracks the aircraft in the launcher’s sights. Then they release the safety and activate the launcher. A speaker starts providing a tone to let the gunner know if the Stinger is tracking the target and there’s even a bone transducer so they can feel the vibration of the lock-on sound when battlefield conditions make it too loud to hear.

Once the aircraft is tracked, the gunner will press the uncage button which allows the infrared seeker to keep tracking even as the gunner elevates the Stinger, and leads the aircraft if necessary. After that, the only thing left to do is pull the trigger.

Once the missile is fired, it follows the infrared light generated by the enemy’s aircraft and tracks it by chasing that light, until the target is destroyed.

"Hey, how do we make it so that the soldier knows it's locked in if there's too much noise?"

_"INSTALL A BONE TRANSDUCER"_

"...So, vibrate. Got it."

I think you misunderstood and associated the price of the Stinger, with the price of the missiles.
The Stinger itself causes around about 120, 000 per unit... Not the ammunition or missile.

The missile knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is - whichever is greater - it obtains a difference or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the missile from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position that it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is is now the position that it wasn't, and if follows that the position that it was is now the position that it isn't. In the event that the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn't, the system has acquired a variation. The variation being the difference between where the missile is and where it wasn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it too may be corrected by the GEA. However, the missile must also know where it was. The missile guidance computer scenario works as follows: Because a variation has modified some of the information that the missile has obtained, it is not sure just where it is. However, it is sure where it isn't, within reason, and it know where it was. It now subtracts where it should be from where it wasn't, or vice versa. And by differentiating this from the algebraic sum of where it shouldn't be and where it was, it is able to obtain the deviation and its variation, which is called error.

First time I ever heard of a Stinger Missile was on Metal Gear Solid for PS1. You use it in multiple ways but mostly to fight Liquid Snake in Metal Gear Rex at the end of the game.
