‘Iceland’: day 39
There is still a little snow. Would we be able to reach Skeiðsvatn now? On the map I also saw another path, which runs on the other side of the river to the lake.
We could already see from the car that the old route was still covered in a lot of snow. Good thing we went for the other route. For that we had to drive further along the unpaved road. Where the path should start according to the map there was nothing to see. Only snow, ice fields and fences in the direction where the path should run.
A little back we did see a walking route to Heljardalsheiði. No idea where that was, but there was a sign and the path seemed walkable. We followed the path along the river Svarfaðardalsá. The melting snow had caused a lot of mud. The puddles were melting. Judging from the tracks on the path the puddles could be very deep. How strong is the remaining layer of ice. We tried to avoid the frozen puddles and mud and walked long stretches on the side of the road. After 20 minutes we were done with it. It was not a pleasant walk and we had no real goal. After a lunch in the sun we decided to climb the mountain to see if we would have a nice view. And we did. On the other side of that mountain flowed the river Skallá, which ended at the bridge at the beginning of our route. So we had still walked a nice round.
