It's tragic because Eastern Europe was well on its way to catching up with the West until communism set them back at least another generation.

I think a lot of people underestimate how much knowledge and technology build upon themselves. A small advantage can build upon itself like a snowball.

I would literally pay every cent I have to listen to Thomas Sowell or Jordan Peterson

You’re doing SOOO much to introduce others to our great TS I’m saddened that so few are interested in even these brief excerpts. Thanks again.

One of the best Anthropological explanations of which I've had the pleasure to listen.

Competition and rivalry between the nations. Nothing wanting to be out done by one's neighbours. Also helped significantly.

80 percent of the worlds edible foods grow within 10 miles of the Mediterranean coastline. That is incredible.

Sometimes people underestimate the influence of the Roman Empire. Everyone in Europe had a language in witch communicate and everyone wanted to be the successor of the empire so creating a lot of competition that enabled Europe to advance really fast (After the Middle Ages)

Thanks guys, great clip and video shots. Helps to reveal just how foolishly simplistic is the argument of our friends who label every form of inequality with emotionally charged accusations of racism or injustice.

Makes me consider asking the question to my many progressive friends here in MA talking about racism etc., ...
"Ok, you think it's all racism, could there be any other factors contributing to the inequality?
"Why do you think the whites in rural areas, of the South were less advanced than their Northern counterparts?"
"What was holding back the whites in Appalachia - the Eskimos in the Arctic - the Native Americans - Blacks in sub-Saharan Africa?"

Then offer the research points Dr Tom makes and see if we can open minds, even just a little.
Thanks again, TSTV

There is also nutritional benefits to living close to the sea vs. middle of the continent and mountains. Sea has all minerals needed for life, including plenty of iodine. When soil is full of these minerals, it produces more produce of higher nutritional value. Look at Europe, it has a huge length of the cost line in relation to the area.

Thank you Professor Sowell. You have put into a condensed, well researched video of what I have suspected for many years. Your videos, in my opinion, should be required
material in schools from k through 12 and beyond.

Let's not forget that the gap between the first world and the third world have closed dramatically in the last years (speaking as a third worlder myself), and all of that mostly thanks to the free market!!!

Today I saved two of my grown boys 100, 000 dollars in student loans in 11 minutes, by sending them this explanation of human development, containing the causes of all the disparities which are today unjustly laid at the feet of America, in part, by it's corrupted educational system. Thank you once again, Thomas Sowell.

Not only geography but education, hard work, imagination, a productive (not destructive) attitude, and good health dictate success. What motivates a man to invent things and do better? Nobody

I like Thomas because he uses logic rather than the race card. He's so refreshing.

This argument is very similar to another one I've read, titled "Guns, Germs, and Steel." Very well reasoned.

Thank you Dr. Sowell for giving to us so freely that which came to you through hard work and research, and then the extra work to make it available to us through these Videos, and your Writings.
