FESTIVAL STAMPEDE
A stampede at a Hindu festival in Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh state has killed at least 27 people and injured 34. Tens of thousands of people attended the Pushkaralu festival and tried to bathe in the Godavari River. Police say the stampede began when some tried to retrieve their shoes from the river.

NETANYAHU CRITICISES NUCLEAR DEAL
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu calls the nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers a ‘bad mistake of historic proportions.’ Israeli media also reported that the prime minister opened a Twitter account in Farsi on Monday, to try to convince Iranians, in their own language, that a nuclear deal is a bad idea for their country. Israel has lobbied against a nuclear deal with Iran since negotiations began. On Tuesday, Iran and six world powers agreed that Iran’s nuclear programme would be limited in exchange for sanctions being lifted.

DEFENCE CHIEFS REPLACED
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has replaced the heads of the armed forces. Buhari said he was dissatisfied with how ineffective the chiefs of the army, navy and air forces had been in battling Boko Haram. Buhari said he expects a new team to work closely with Niger and Chad in building a strong regional coalition against the militant group. Boko Haram is believed to have killed more than 10,000 people since 2009.

PROBE NEARS PLUTO
The New Horizons space probe has almost reached Pluto. It’s the first spacecraft to do so. It travelled 4 point 8 billion kilometres for nearly ten years to reach the so-called dwarf planet. NASA’s spacecraft has already revealed that Pluto is two-thirds the size of Earth’s moon, larger than previous estimates. Scientists have debated Pluto’s size since it was discovered in 1930.
