pog champs aside... most schoolyard arguments were caused by that one kid who brought one of those knockoff metal smashers and would destroy all the cardboard pogs

In Indonesia, we know the game as Tajos/Tazos and now I just discovered that the term came from Australia. However they were popular during the early 2000s & they are made out of metal discs instead of cardboard. Back then, our school banned the game (along with card games like Pokemon & Yu-Gi-Oh) and we resolved to host illegal underground games after-schools to the point that some group became kingpins for owning the majority of tazos and rivalry between those group started to pop up (usually between grades and classes). We used Tazos as a bargaining chip for favors like cheat sheets, trading toys, cards, snacks and drinks (although it was a rare occasion). Few months later (I can't quite remember), a Tazos-backed theft happened and the school finally realize what was happening. They checked everyone's bag and confiscated all of the tazos rendering it useless. They also banned snacks where the tazos originated from the vendors around the school.

In Mexico during the 2000s, Tazos were still a big thing. I remember getting them in bags of chips and playing with my cousins.

If you're a collector of pogs, does that make you a pogchamp?

There was some really surreal artwork on a lot of POGs. I remember I collected them more for their trippy imagery than for the game.

Ah the tender memories of not understanding pogs or pokemon yet amassing pokemon pogs just to feel somewhat relatable to other kids, then getting yelled at by parents for your budding addiction, and lastly being completely destroyed by that one boy who hauled a 2 kg bag of pogs around

India was Tazos too. I remember them being around as late as 2003/4. What a wonderful time. I should still have like 30-40 of em lying somewhere deep in the storage shed.

Here in Belgium they were called Flippos. the later ones also had little creases around the side which could be used to catapult other Flippos
