This was time when HTC was coolest phone in Android space and not a Samsung. Nokia Lumia was in same years too.

In 2013, I think Motorola & hTC were the biggest brands. Blackberry was big, but there was no chance in hell that they would use any other OS but BBOS.
I think somewhere down the line Canonical did something very wrong (don't know what). How else would you explain the Jolla phones that came out around the same time ? I believe at one time there were at least a dozen of them.

I was one of the supporters on the Ubuntu touch phone indiegogo campaign. It was a shame that it didn't succeed, but I agree that it was quite a bit of a stretch.

I remember this well. I believe a big part of problem with the community was Ubuntu developing their own window manager, mir, while the community pretty much all lined up behind an alternative called wayland.

Funnily enough the exact same thing happened with snaps versus flatpaks a few years later.

UBports isn't connected to Unity 7 development at all. They only took over Unity 8 which is the successor of Unity 7 completely written from scratch with Qt/QML. Unity 8 has been renamed to Lomiri. Unity 7 is the one that's an officialy flavor :)

The way you are surprised about Mark Shuttleworth and Ubuntu Touch makes me wonder if you are ten years old. Either way, wait until you find out about these guys Richard Stallmann or that legend Steve Ballmer ;)

The wave of hype was pretty big, a lot of bloggers talked about that project, they had some demos on huge conferences like IFA, and there were also tons of stuff like launchers, lock screens and widgets instantly released for android by 3rd party developers to make your phone look like Ubuntu touch.
That was pretty good commercial for Canonical and Ubuntu itself.

Mark Shuttleworth is the only name I've definitively associate with Ubuntu and have since it started.

KDE for phones and TVs (bigscreen) must learn from Ubuntu's Unity convergence mistakes.

A good deal with any actual ARM maker (unfortunately pinephone models are far from actual) as Xiaomi or Huawei, to offer KDE versions for some of their actual Android devices, would be nice to have.

Or at least a way to be able to install ARM LiGNUx with KDE on some devices would be the way to go.

I never liked Unity and it was actually the reason why I stopped using Ubuntu. However, I was excited for Ubuntu Touch. It's sad that it never worked out.

10:00 i dont think 32 millions was the real cost of the entire project, i think rasing this ammount of money in a crowdfunding would just prove there is a demmand, but the real cost was highers, most crowdfunding campaings are there just to prove to investors that there is a market for an idea, and if they put money into it, this market would reach an public even higher, not to show the real cost or fund an project.

AFAIK, the Ubuntu Unity Spin (based on Unity 7) has nothing to do with UBports and their continued development of Unity 8 (now called Lomiri).

There was an argument a long time ago between Mark Shuttleworth and a KDE Dev I think it was Jonathan Riddel . I don't remember when or what it was about

I guess you are pretty young 🤣🤣🤣
Did you know that Mark Shuttleworth was also a Debian developer back in the day?
