That's because there are only two ways to do backwards compatibility, either through emulation, which is what the digital downloads are, or to literally build the pervious system's hardware into the modern console itself, , which would make the system FAR more expensive. Although, with the PS1, it may be possible to integrate that using far smaller modern hardware equivalent to it

As someone who just modded my old ps3 slim and ripped my games to play on pc. Im glad old me kept the console and games over the years. Still got my ps2.

No reason Sony can’t emulate ps1 and ps2 games and just read the disc. Not sure why they don’t do that.

For those curious The reason the PS1 game doesn’t show an error is because like the PS4 the PS5 doesn’t have a laser capable of reading CDs it only supports Blu ray and DVD presumably because nobody uses CDs anymore
