New York Bail Reform is a Disaster

I've been a police officer for just over 10 years and worked 3rd shift until just a few months ago. I created the Columbus Police Body Camera YouTube channel so citizens could see what Police Officers are really like at work without all the media spin.

I recently started the Thoughts of a Patrol Officer YouTube channel. This is a place where I share stories from my career and talk about stuff that's in the news. I'm not a comedian, I don't sing or dance. I'm just a Patrol Officer who shares his no-B.S. thoughts about what's happening in the world today.

Posting Schedule:
News Review videos on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 6am
Vlog Thought Videos on Monday, Wednesday and Friday (Fridays are donut shop reviews)

Thank you for talking about this topic. I live in NY, and I completely agree with you. This is sad that people can commit crimes and then be released. Many of them do not show up for court, if or when they reoffend, the same thing happens, they get a slap on the wrist and get out again with a new date.

I'll be 65 in a couple of months, so I've seen the pendulum swing back and forth several times. It never seems to stop in the middle, though. The current system seems to favor the criminal rather than protect victims and potential victims. To me, the innocent (those who haven't committed a crime) and their rights should come first. It must be awful to work for someone who has taken some of your power away. Come on down to Florida where we appreciate our first responders and bosses back the blue.

I don't think that you're off base at all & I agree with you. Thank you for addressing this issue. I think that there should be accountability & I think that if you do the crime than you should do the time & have to pay the fine/bail. Dumping repeat offenders right back out onto our streets is ridiculous ! What stops an offender from offending if he knows that their will be no immediate consequences for his behavior, bad actions/choices ?! If people of color having the disadvantage of being able to post bail than here's an idea "Don't commit a crime!!". That goes for every & any color !

Stay safe, Keep warm & God bless you & your wife & kids 💙👮🏻🚔

my cousin was arrested for murder and given 500k bond.
He was out the next day.His dad put up his business as collateral for bail.
after being out of jail a week, he was arrested again for CCW.
typical knucklehead.

Also happening in Chicago, Minneapolis and st.paul in fact a suspect that attacked a st. Paul police officer was out on $1000.00 bail before the officer was out of the hospital

Great video. Here for first time offenders are given a promise to appear, and off they go. If they reoffend they sit in jail till their bail hearing. Alot don't get out on bail, but it depends on if they are summary convictions or not. Keep up the great work you do. Have a great day my friend ❤😊. Please stay safe and well.

Common sense has pretty much left America. At least politically. Thanks for your common sense, for this video, and for your service. Stay safe. 🇺🇸🇺🇸

Bring back Chief Jackson and Ron Obrien. It is time to take back Columbus. No more puppets from the mayor's office.

Reasonable laws from politicians in the US?! Blasphemy! Heresy! That makes too much sense!

Major reform is needed now!
These bail reform laws are frankly, insane! It almost seems like they take common sense out of the process. Hopefully after this year’s election we will be on the way to common sense again.

Hard labour might deter some repeat offenders. Major reform is required.

Your voice is appealing and comforting. You could do voiceovers, narrate books on tape, etc.

Thanks for this video. I believe that for those, first time non violent offenders, they should have their arrests examined. Summonses, some refer to as tickets, are designed to do just this. Release a person who then would need to appear in court at a later date. Sometimes, a judge will dismiss the penalty attached to the crime that person was initially arrested for. And in NYC, a desk appearance ticket is a prime example of that.
But when a 16 year old, twice caught with a firearm, who while struggling with police, shoots a police officer, that person should not have been granted bail.
New York State, and specifically, the five boroughs that make up New York City, need to view a person's past criminal history when it comes to considering their release.
In many past cases, law enforcement were required to check a person's warrant status before issuing a summons. And if that party has a warrant, ya know..for not showing up to court for a previous arrest that they promised to take care of in front of a judge but failed to appear, what is that officer supposed to do? Violate the departments policy and not perform the warrant check? Or just let that person go?
The system in place now is flawed. I'm not sure what the answer is.
Thanks again
Stay safe...

My problem with bail is that a bondsman can put it up. The concept of bail is that the person puts up money to be released and gets that money back once they conclude their case. If you lose money by failing to show up for court, you are more likely to show up to court. Sure the bondsman will hunt you down and haul you in if you fail to appear, but at the end of the day you are out the money you pay him to put up your bail whether you abscond or not. I think bail should be lower and people should be required to come up with the money themselves.

When I hear these types of stories on the news, they always sound somewhat bias and slanted to me. I am usually left feeling a little confused about the true state of things, if I am being honest. You do a great job breaking down your points and using multiple sources to support your ideas. I look forward to these types videos because I feel that your perspective comes from a place of rationality and genuinely wanting to improve our current system. Thank you for taking the time to make these!

In Cali, the all too loosey goosey attitude has forced stores to close ... Need some vitamins and shampoo (?) just walk in a store & grab it .. literally ... no store interference, no arrests ... it's BS, pure and simple

I could argue either side of this topic depending what day you ask me. I heard of one case where a man was in jail for two years awaiting trial, there was police misconduct involved and he was acquitted. Where does he go to get two years of his life back? And what happened to the right to a speedy trial? Oh yeah, he was black. And poor.

On the other hand, I don't think people with multiple cases going should be getting out without bail even if it's non violent crime.
