There are two Tesla megapacks in Auckland, New Zealand already. One is just down the road from me. They are smaller installations but they are beta tests on specific suburbs to see how good they perform. One is in Hobsonville, Auckland with a capacity of 1MW-2.3MWh to power around 450 homes. There is another in Glen Innes, East Auckland which with the same specifications. It's pretty exciting to see these installations going in!

Hey Steven, just a heads up that "Independent Power Producers" is not a reference to retail battery owners who have a powerwall at a house. It's an industry term for non-utility (i.e. unregulated) power generators.

👍 Steven ... We are at the pre S curve ramp. ... I used to work at American Power Conversion (APC) in the late 1990’s as the EMEA Symmetra product marketing manager for 3 years in Paris before it was purchased by Schneider Electric. Schneider is one of the biggest installers of server room components. The Symmetra was a modular, scalable UPS (uninterruptible power supply) essentially supplying backup power when the grid went down so that the servers wouldn’t crash. It did this very quickly because servers can’t tolerate more the absence of power for more than half a cycle of the AC power. This is a common function in all Datacenters. The Symmetra allowed the user to add power modules and battery modules to adapt to the power and backup time needs as they evolved. So you only paid what you needed at any particular moment . The backup time was carefully configured to (at a minimum) provide the time to start and get the generators up to stable operation at which time the power of the datacenter was smoothly switched over. The Symmetra monitored the quality of power it delivered, protected against power surges and brownouts .. so the monitoring software and he firmware did all of that and could be updated at will .. even remotely. As you know downtime is extremely expensive loss of revenue!! Imagine a city with all kinds of sensitive equipment. So what Tesla’s energy division is essentially creating is a Solar powered and charging UPS for the grid instead of the datacenter! Voilà. I wouldn’t be surprised if his hardware and software engineers aren’t ex-datacenter UPS designers. 👍 As all utility companies are aware of this sort of backup power, I wouldn’t be surprised if we would get the revenue to exceed the automobile industry revenue in 3-5 years! Remember the costs of perturbation to the grid FAR outweigh the cost of this solar powered backup system. So the question is what risk do you want to take? The more instable your grid is and the faster you are going to need what Tesla is offering. I think you can look on internet the countries where power is unstable and get a good idea. A few that I remember was Pakistan, India ... I used to train in those countries with a UPS providing backup for the slide projectors and the things I couldn’t do with out to continue training. 🤩😄 Plus generators pollute and don’t always turn on. The maintenance on this legacy systems is enormous!! Plus datacenters prefer to rely on good reliable grids without having to resort to generators!!! So these systems not only provide peak demand security, but continuous service in case of grid blackouts.

This is real. I am in uk. Have 4kw solar and a Powerwall. I am in the Tesla tariff with octopus energy which means Tesla control my powerwall and import/export. I have no standing charge. And get the same price for electricity I consume from grid or export to grid. The Powerwall charged during the night and export at peak times. I live in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 and I am in green. Tesla will definitely be making a killing from this from this over a year.
