Two Leica 21mm Lenses

Nick Rains examines the widest fixed focal length lens currently available in the Leica M range. The 21mm focal length. There is a wider lens admittedly, the Tri-Elmar, but with it being 16, 18, and 21mm, all the comments in the video are still valid.

Leica should have trained every store staff(worldwide) to possess at least 0.1% of Nick's knowledge, experience and skills.

The 21mm lens maybe considered ' ultra wide ', but in my experience it is actually the most natural and closest to the coverage of the human eyes and its angular coverage of about 90 degrees falls within the sweet range of the human ' Binocular ' vision. The point to remember in photography is that the human mind, a super computer if there ever was, interprets and adjusts the visual information received from the eye in a manner as to fulfill our expectations of the perspective as we want it to be. I do have a few 20mm and 21 mm lenses, including a Leitz Leica 21 mm F2.8 Elmarit M ASPH, a 21 mm F2.8 Zeiss Biogon for Contax G, and a Nikkor AIS 20mm F2.8. They are all superb lenses.

I wish we had this level of Leica support in New Zealand.

I greatly appreciate your review, more special when you have great images to showcase the lens instead of pictures of cats. I think an used and well cared lux vs a new elmar would be my choice and you helped me to make my choice. I still shoot film as well so the extra stops will help. Great job! Thank you

Thanks Nick. Looking forward to the APO Summicron-SL 21mm when it's released.

Great educational video, thanks. Do you have a view on the 16-18-21 Tri-Elmar ?

@7:54 It is actually 2 and a half stops, but yes the difference is dramatic on a 21.

Amazing photos! Leica summilux 21 mm 1.4 is one of the best M lenses and my favourite focal lenght but I’m wondering if it will fit well with new leica M11 or we need new lenses for M11 new sensor?
Thank you

Professional as always. My lens collection for my M-P 240/M 240 includes a 21, 50 and 90 mm. I'm a great fan of the 21 mm focal length, and it has been very useful in tight spaces and low light conditions as well. So I agree with Nick! BTW: you make some of the best and helpful reviews on YT. Keep on rolling!

I love the 21 mm focal length as much as the 35 mm one... in my kit I only have an Apo Summicron 35 mm and Elmarit 21 mm Pre Asph and as soon as I can I will get a Summilux 21 mm

Shooting on the M11P currently... and loving it!!! As far as wides go I have the 28 LUX... now that is one stellar lens. So had to save a few bucks and opted for the 21mm 3.4. Best W/A combo I've ever owned!!!

My 21mm f3.4 Super Angulon is a lovely lens Nick. On a digital you do get colour fringing because of the proximity of the rear element to the sensor but that can be dealt with in post. Having said that, on my M-A it works really well and because it is vintage, it renders beautifully and is not as clinical as the modern lenses. It also looks beautiful and is an engineering masterpiece.

Wonderful video. Are these photos made by a digital camera or a film camera ? Thanks so much.

Thank you so much for this video. 21 mm is one of my favorites for street photography. I use the VOIGTLANDER SKOPAR 21MM F/4.0 P-TYPE VM LEICA M-BAJONETT wich is very affordable.

Wow, amazing photos that really demonstrate why you would want the 21mm focal length. Nicely done!
